JOHN GOLLINGS: THE HISTORY OF THE BUILT WORLD
Museum of Sydney
November 2019
This was an MGA travelling exhibition. The first major survey of Gollings’s photographic practice, this exhibition offered a much anticipated opportunity to appreciate the full breadth of his distinctive career and unique artistic vision.
My role was exhibition design and installation management.
The paper-based photographs required low lighting levels, so a dark colour palette was used to provide contrast and make the works seem as bright as possible. The copper colour is also present in many of the works - as architectural elements, and components of the landscape - so using a metallic copper coloured paint to create feature areas highlighted that, and brought the exhibition together.
The exhibition content was organised into geographical sections which dictated the size of the freestanding wall sections. Repurposed existing timber flats from a previous exhibition were used to build this, in order to save budget and landfill.
